Like most- COVID-19 has tried to take my edges, it’s called me everything but a child of God and even tried to cancel my wedding. My immediate reaction was to freak out, cry, pray, and then start again from step one. Fortunately, I’m finally feeling at peace with the new reality this pandemic has ushered into my life. The best tool that I have used to get back to this place has been sticking with my morning routine. In the morning I get up, do some light stretches, journal, read my bible and start the morning with daily affirmations. These cards remind me who I am, keep me assured that everything will be alright, and help me face the day.
A while ago my therapist suggested that I write down affirmations and I actually laughed at the idea. At the time, all I could think of is “10 outta 10 people do not recommend saying nice things to yourself. It’s so corny.” *screams internally at how ridiculous my life was just a short time ago and inserts praise break that I’ve been delivered*
But, eventually, I broke down and took some flashcards and wrote affirmations to myself that I knew would help me feel better in a time of need. I started with a comment someone left on my IG that stayed with me for a while after I read it. Whenever I think of it, it reminds me to be strong and gracious. It also reminds me to never forget that I’m not alone and people all around the world are cheering for me to succeed. The message lifted my heart during so many moments that I’m going to share it below.
I’ve added to my pile every time things get tough. Customizing my affirmations to the situation reminds me of the power of the tongue and helps me prepare for whatever the Devil has thrown at me recently. They’ve changed my life around so much that I wanted to share with you how to make your own.
First, find a piece of paper. This can be a sticky note, some scratch paper, or a notecard. The sky is the limit here. Then, take whatever writing utensils you have such as pens, pencils, markers, crayons, or sharpies and design something that you want to read every day.
Now, this is often the hardest part- don’t say anything negative! Words of affirmation are meant to uplift you so even if it feels awkward for a while, write something that you know will reaffirm your beliefs or pick you up.
Next, read it over and over again until you believe the words you wrote and remember that God will never give you more than you can bear.
The simple change of adding words of affirmation to my day has helped me stay strong during these uncertain times. What are you doing to give yourself some extra love during this global pandemic? Let me know in the comments below!
